National Citizen Party (NCP) has demanded that the Awami League be tried for ‘genocide’, its registration be cancelled, and be banned from political and organizational activities.

Thr party’s member secretary Akhtar Hossain said that Awami League will not be allowed to be rehabilitated in Bangladesh.

He came up with the demand during a protest rally of Dhaka Metropolitan unit NCP in front of the National Museum in Shahbagh on Saturday (March 22) afternoon.

Addressing the programme, Akhtar Hossain said: “We swear by the blood of the brothers who gave their lives on the streets, we will not allow Awami League to engage in politics as long as there is a single drop of blood in our bodies.”

Stating that Awami League should be banned as a party, he said: “Awami League did not leave peacefully. These ‘murderous-fascists’ who soaked the streets with the blood of thousands of people have left. We may be reborn. But we will not allow Awami League to be rehabilitated. Every time the Awami League has come to power in Bangladesh, the lives of ordinary people have been put at risk.

“The people of the country have given their lives to show that the Awami League will no longer be able to do politics in this country,” Akhtar Hossain added.

He said: “The surprising thing is that even after seven months, the interim government has not started the judicial activities of the Awami League. I will tell the interim government that the Awami League as a party must be brought to justice. No organizational activities can be carried out in the name of the Awami League. The registration must be cancelled immediately.”

NCP’s chief organizer Hasnat Abdullah said: “So far, whoever rehabilitated the Awami League has had to pay the price. Ziaur Rahman, who rehabilitated the Awami League, had to pay for it with his life. Jamaat rehabilitated the Awami League, and it was paid for by hanging their leaders and activists. Then the Awami League was rehabilitated again. It had to be paid for through the Peelkhana and Shapla massacres and the destruction of all the institutions of the country.”

“If Awami League is rehabilitated again, we will have to pay the price with our lives,” he added.
